2025 - The Door
Are people evil or good? It’s a question that has plagued humanity for all of history and continues today. In our current culture, it is hurtful and offensive to claim that someone is morally wrong. At the same time, we look at those who hold different values and beliefs and demonize one another, leading to abuse and oppression. This back and forth leads us ultimately to watered down concepts of what is moral, without better ideals of what is sacred and good. The story of scripture, however, offers us something better. An understanding that both recognizes the great evil humanity is capable of, while also upholding the value and beauty inherent in every person. This year at ONE Conference, join us as we enter into that story, where we’ll learn about being separated, set apart, and saved as we explore this year’s theme: “The Door.”
SESSION 1
In the beginning it was good. Humanity, God’s precious creation, lived in paradise and experienced his presence, walking through the garden with Him. They wanted for nothing, lacked nothing. But they chose disobedience – they chose to define good and evil on their own terms rather than trusting God’s wisdom and direction – and that choice to go their own way rather than submit to God had tremendous consequences. They were SEPARATED from paradise and God’s presence, the door shut on the life they had once lived. Since then, things haven’t been wholly good. Something isn’t right.
SESSION 2
Total affirmation and acceptance, or total enemies – for many in our culture, these seem to be the only two options when it comes to relating to others. We struggle with finding a way to relate and live with those who are different, and the latest innovations in technology and social media seem to only make it easier to demonize those we disagree with.
The story of God’s people shows us a different way forward – to be SET APART, while still living in the world, engaging with our neighbors, and loving those around us. Just like the Israelites were marked by the blood on their doorframes, followers of Jesus should be distinguishable today – but as Jesus reminds us, in these times our most distinguishing mark is the way we love.
Session 3
When Jesus shared the Passover meal with his followers, he did something remarkable. Instead of only pointing backwards as a reminder of the Exodus and first Passover, he showed them that it pointed to him – and to the SAVING work he was about to do through his own death and resurrection. In fact, the Jesus’ death and resurrection is full of “door moments” – the referral to the Passover, the tearing of the temple curtain, and the stone having been rolled away – all point us toward the ultimate work that Jesus did in reuniting us with the God we’d separated ourselves from.
All Weekend
Over the course of the weekend, students play a video scavenger hunt. After dispersing for lunch and church-specific activities on Saturday, students returned to NorthEast. Dressing in funny onesies, groups are presented awards for their scavenger hunt submissions, and the group with the most points claims the title of ONESIE Champions.
